  • Only commenter, guess everyone’s on bookface.
    And better late than never…
Whatever Apple’s reasons for de-participating in CES.
You have to admit, these days, Apple is probably bigger than all the companies at CES combined. Samsung holds their derivative and dreadful events to make themselves look as big as Apple in the phone space, but really their flagships don’t sell that well, and the majority of the Android sales are in the cheapest possible phone.

I’m sure in the old days Apple felt they might have been drowned out by the desperation of everyone else trying to get noticed at CES, and decided to hold their own modest events to control the message to the faithful and the media. The enthusiasts would have evangelised and the media would have done their usual – great tech, but who’s going to buy it at those prices?

These days, mainstream media puts iPhone releases up front in the nightly news, and Apple apparently doesn’t need the enthusiasts anymore. And whatever enthusiasts can evangelise Apple’s neglected Macs (I’m looking at you iMac Pro, not to mention the whole line in years past), it doesn’t register on the scale of iPhone to the 5 executives who think they can run a company 10x the size it was when Jobs passed away.

Further to that, and here’s a topic for any curmudgeons out there – stop bragging about the Mac business being the size it is and start treating it like it’s an actual business without the foot on its throat, denying Mac touch and pencil support… before congress comes after you to split up iPhone into hardware and software and App Store.
