How to use voicemail transcription on your iPhone, so you can read voicemails instead of listening to them

  • Visual voicemail is a feature that transcribes voicemail messages on your iPhone.
  • If your carrier offers visual voicemail on iPhone, it's automatically turned on. 
  • To transcribe a voicemail on your iPhone, simply tap on the voicemail to see the text.

If you're in a meeting, at the library, or someplace else where you can't take a call, you probably won't get to check a voicemail right away. 

Thankfully, there's an iPhone feature that lets you read voicemail transcriptions so that you can quickly get the message without even having to listen to it. 

Here's how to turn on and use voicemail transcriptions on your iPhone.

How to turn on iPhone voicemail transcriptions

If your wireless carrier provides voicemail transcriptions, this feature is automatically turned on. 

You can check this list to see if "visual voicemail" is listed under your carrier or simply follow the steps below. 

1. Open the Phone app and navigate to the Voicemail tab.

2. Tap on a voicemail to transcribe it.If the voicemail hasn't been transcribed before, you may see the message "Transcribing Voicemail…" as it loads.

3. In a few moments, the transcription should appear. 

4. If you need to revisit the voicemail, the transcription should immediately appear when you tap on it. You may see some blanks (indicated as "____") if the software is unable to make out what the speaker is saying.

5. To share the transcription, tap to select a portion text, then tap Copy or Share.
