Apple’s next iPad Pro refresh could give fans a new 12-inch screen option, according to a new report. It is expected to arrive in March with a revamped camera system that includes a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor for 3D scanning.

A number of reports that have surfaced this week promised that Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro lineup is on track for a March release — despite delays related to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

All point toward a revamped camera system being the biggest selling point of the new models, but a new report includes a somewhat surprising tidbit about a possible new size option that upset fans of the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

iPad Pro to shrink in 2020?

“After upgrading its 9.7-inch iPad to 10.2-inch spec in 2019, Apple is set to release its new 12-inch iPad Pro model featuring a rear-end three-lens ToF 3D sensor in the spring,” reports Digitimes, citing industry sources.

“Upstream supply chain partners already kicked off production of related components for the new model before the Lunar New Year holiday seeking to support iPad Pro shipment ramp-up by assemblers after the holiday.”

2020 iPad Pro shipments are expected to ramp up in March, and could peak at around 3-3.5 million units during the second quarter. Apple hopes the refresh will boost its share of the global tablet market, the report adds.

This is the first we’ve heard of a 12-inch iPad Pro, and we’re not sure whether we should read too much into these claims. It’s entirely possible that this is a typo, rather than an actual suggestion gleaned from Apple’s supply chain.

This seems unlikely

iPad Pro fans love the 12.9-inch model. Some, like those who use an iPad Pro all day, every day, would actually like to see the device get even bigger. There’s already an 11-inch option for those who want something smaller.

It seems highly unlikely, then, that Apple would reduce the size of the larger iPad Pro.
