Dell sells Bedford-based cybersecurity business for $2B

Texas-based Dell is seeking to simplify its hardware, software and security businesses in order to pay down debt.

Dell Technologies Inc. will sell its Bedford-based cybersecurity unit RSA for $2.08 billion in cash to a consortium of investors as the computer makers tries to streamline its business.

The buyers are led by Symphony Technology Group, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board and AlpInvest Partners, and the deal is expected to close in the next six to nine months, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday.

RSA has 2,146 employees, according to Bloomberg. About 700 were based in Massachusetts as of 2016, according to Boston Business Journal research.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell is seeking to simplify its hardware, software and security businesses in order to pay down debt. Dell’s acquisition of Hopkinson-based EMC Corp., which was announced at $67 billion and closed three years ago, is among the largest in the history of technology.

"This is the right long-term strategy for Dell, RSA and our collective customers and partners," said Jeff Clarke, chief operating officer and vice chairman of Dell Technologies. "The transaction will further simplify our business and product portfolio. It also allows Dell Technologies to focus on our strategy to build automated and intelligent security into infrastructure, platforms and devices to keep data safe, protected and resilient."
