Report: Apple Prepping Over-Ear AirPods

Target reportedly has an internal listing for 'Apple AirPods (X Generation),' according to a tech analyst, meaning we might see over-ear versions of Apple's popular headphones this spring.

Apple is prepping an over-the-ear version of its AirPods that’ll arrive for $399, according to a leaked listing on Target.

According to tech analyst Jon Prosser, Target listed an "Apple AirPods (X Generation)" on its internal systems. On Saturday, he tweeted images of the listing, which came from unnamed Target employees.

"I’m thinking 'Apple AirPods (X Generation)' is just a placeholder name in their system until the real thing is announced," he said in a follow-up tweet. "But... ‘AirPods X’ would be pretty cool."

Save for the $399 price, the listing provided no other details. However, Prosser said Target’s system showed listings for three different models. "So we could be looking at three color options," he added.

Apple’s AirPods have been a massive hit for the company, which is making more money from wearables than it is from Mac products. But the company has so far refrained from releasing an over-the-ear version under the Apple brand name. Instead, Cupertino has used its Beat brands to release ear cans for consumers, including the Beats Solo Pro, which launched last fall for $299.

However, since 2018, reports have indicated Apple's desire to expand the AirPods line into the over-the-ear headphone space with a premium product. We’ll have to wait and see, but we could end up hearing some news soon. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to announce several new products, including a low-cost iPhone, this spring.
