iPhone coming at 6 PM local time, but you’ll need to wait in line

The iPhone is going on sale at 6 PM (local time) on the 29th, but chances are …

I figured that having a fixed release date would cure some of the iPhone mania, but as soon as June 29 was announced, people began wondering about a time. And once we heard the iPhone was going on sale at 6pm, people started wondering about a time zone, of all things. And now we've got an answer to that too: the iPhone will be going on sale at 6pm local time. Hey, if being OCD over the time zone floats your boat, go for it.

If you're hoping to snag an iPhone after 6pm on the 29th, chances are you're going to have to wait in line. But even if you wait in line, the consensus right now seems to be that you still may not come home with an iPhone due to supply shortages. The hype and excitement over the iPhone suggests that supplies will be pretty tight at launch, which isn't particularly unexpected, but the global nature of manufacturing means an increase in iPhone production can take a few weeks to translate into more units being available. AT&T will also have to deal with setting up technical and sales support. While they aren't quite as glamorous as long lines outside an AT&T store, they are part of the supply chain nonetheless. All in all, the iPhone launch is (still) shaping up to be quite a rollercoaster, so get your tents ready.
