HP optimistic about Indian printing market

    Synopsis

India’s retail boom is giving Hewlett-Packard’s printing division a big high.

NEW DELHI: India’s retail boom is giving Hewlett-Packard’s printing division a big high. There’s an opportunity that the company sees in the area of high quality signages or hoardings which require large format digital printing solutions. “Besides the retail boom, what’s driving the business is the increasing costs of advertising on television,” says Enrique Lores, vice president, HP.

The other advantages, according to Mr Lores, are that “an innovative idea can be presented quickly and one can make changes on the fly”. Talking about worldwide trends, Mr Lores said that the movie industry was especially particular that the posters or hoardings depicted exactly the same colours as the film — and that’s where new digital printing solutions, such as HP’s new DreamColor technologies, come in. HP has other reasons to be optimistic about the Indian printing market — growing at 47.5% year-on-year, it is second only to China as the fastest growing market in the world. It is estimated that from 267.9 million euros in 2005, the Indian market will grow to 952.3 million euros in 2010. India’s share of the overall printing market, meanwhile is expected to grow from 1.9% in 2005 to 7.9% in 2010.

Till now, it’s the elction posters that’s mostly accounted for large format printing in India — but India’s sudden mall culture is all set to change that. Besides billboards, large format printing solutions are also used for building wraps, bus shelters, floor and window graphics, point-of-purchase displays, packaging and textile printing with a variety of substrates from rigid surfaces such as doors, tables or glass, to banners, vinyl and uncoated paper. “Superior quality large format printing will be in demand in India also because the new technologies provide speed and take up very little space compared to earlier printers,” says Mr Lores.
