Price cut for AT&T iPhone plans?

Rumor suggests Apple/AT&T are looking to cut iPhone plans by $10

When the iPhone was first introduced, the baseline iPhone plan started out at $60 per month. When Apple added the 3G iPhone, the plan was increased to $70. The data portion of the plan was increased $10 to accompany the improved 3G data speeds.

A rumor now from TheStreet.com has the iPhone rate plan trimmed back down $10. Described as a "strong possibility," the financial site is expecting the move when Apple introduces the new iPhone this summer. It's widely expected we'll see a June release, potentially a month away at the June 8th World Wide Developer Conference.

The move will certainly be welcome to all customers, but particularly the fence sitters using a less expensive "dumb" phones without a data plan. The move will also make the iPhone competitive with other smartphones. It will essentially cut $240 off of the two-year annualized life of the phone's contract. Perhaps even more so, there are legions of original iPhone users still on the grandfathered $60/EDGE monthly plan. In a tough economy, those users may opt to keep their monthly budgets static and hold off on upgrading.
