Spotify Adds Support for MeeGo, But Not Windows Phone

Spotify launched an app for Nokia's first, possibly last, MeeGo smartphone, the N9.

Spotify has launched an app for Nokia's first, and possibly last, MeeGo smartphone, the N9.

The 0.5MB file is free at Nokia's Ovi Store, but you're required to subscribe to a Premium account for $9.99 a month. This lets you build playlists and play songs offline and free of ad interruptions on mobile devices.

Oddly, support for Nokia's niche mobile operating system comes before a Windows Phone 7 app. Since launching in the U.S. in July, Spotify has unveiled apps for iOS, Android, and a . See for more.

Nokia announced the N9 in June to much developer acclaim, only to see the thunder stolen the next day when Nokia CEO Stephen Elop teased the first Nokia Windows Mobile device, . Elop officially the Lumia 800 and 710.

MeeGo is a Maemo/Moblin hybrid operating system in February 2010. The platform is generally deemed a commercial failure and he plans to kill off MeeGo even if the N9 is popular in order to focus his efforts on Windows Phone devices.

It's too bad, because in , PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan said it was "utterly gorgeous" and a "curiosity from an alternate universe." The N9 features a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen made from scratch-resistant curved glass, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera and HD-quality video capture, a near-field communication (NFC) chip, and no buttons.
