In a shocking case, two Delhi men falsely obtained refunds from e-commerce giant Amazon on 166 mobile phones. The duo, now arrested by Delhi Police, have been identified as Shivam Chopra and his accomplice Sachin Jain, residents of city’s Tri Nagar. The police officials have recovered Rs 12 lakh in cash, 25 mobile phones and 40 bank passbooks during the investigations, Indianexpress.com reports. “The accused had ordered expensive phones like Samsung, iPhone, One Plus. Chopra had opted for cash on delivery on all their orders and would pay through gift vouchers. He then would falsely claim that he never received the phone and ask for a refund in the form of a gift voucher,” a police officer was quoted as saying.
The bluffmasters came under police net after one Syed Ishaq, 36, filed a complaint on behalf of Amazon Seller Services Private Limited. Ishaq alleged that a total of 166 orders for mobile phones were placed between April 2017 and May 2017 and that there was something that was wrong with it. The police launched an extensive investigation to catch the accused. The cops had to trace mobile numbers used to make calls, question locals and take the help of Amazon delivery boys to identify Chopra.
Chopra revealed to police that he purchased a number of SIM cards from Jain who runs a telecom store in the neighborhood. Police said that Chopra used to pay Rs 150 for one SIM and purchased about 150 pre-activated SIMs. In shocking revelation about their trick, the police officer said that the accused had used 141 numbers and 48 different customer accounts and a refund in full was sought against all orders.
The police claimed that accused made orders from different locations near his locality. Due to the wrong address, when the delivery boy would get lost, Shivam would guide them to his house. After receiving the order, Shivam would call up Amazon and claim that he received empty boxes and ask for the refund, the police claimed.
