Will Apple re-make the textbook industry next week?

Apple has confirmed the rumored book-related event in New York later this month. The company has sent out an invitation to a "education announcement" at the Guggenheim Museum, NYC at 10AM (Eastern) on January 19th.

I took a guess that this would be something to do with text books, and it looks like I might have been dead on. Apple has always been big in education. The iPad is great for reading and more interactive learning. And Apple already has iTunes U and the iBooks Store.

And according to Walter Isaacson's biography, Steve Jobs "wanted to disrupt the textbook industry" and said that was "the next business he wanted to transform."

It seems pretty clear that Apple is set to lighten the loads of students, and eat into the profits of chiropractors the world over. But will it be "disruptive" in the same way that iTunes music and apps have been? Or will it simply be a lame me-too offering like the iBooks Store or [insert any Apple cloud product here]?

I guess we'll know by next Thursday.
