Originally slated for a March 2012 release date, Rockstar announced today that it is pushing back Max Payne 3 to May 15 in North America for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles and to May 29 for the PC.

According to Computer and Video Games, the move was intended to "ensure that Max Payne 3 delivers the highest quality." Rockstar is no stranger to product delays; its two most-recent titles, and , were also delayed. However, the company does pride itself on putting out a quality product, which it has achieved time and time again.

Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, also offered some insight into the delay. "With Max Payne 3 now slated for May, our robust lineup of upcoming releases for fiscal 2013 is even stronger, including BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and other titles yet to be announced for release that year," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two. "We are well positioned to deliver growth and profitability over the long term."

Max Payne 3 takes place nearly eight years since the release of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. It follows haunted hero Max Payne and his journey from the cold alleyways of New York City to the exotic streets of Sao Paulo. It's a third-person action shooter game that also features multiplayer—something new to the franchise, but an element Rockstar has recently included in its western, Red Dead Redemption.
