Microsoft Working On Web Version Of Skype To Expand Its Reach

Following
This article is more than 10 years old.

Microsoft is apparently working on a web version of Skype, which can be accessed by users directly through their browsers without needing to download any app or install any software. [1] Skype is already available for all major platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

Check out our complete analysis of Microsoft

Skype has more than 750 million users worldwide. Microsoft plans to integrate Skype with all of its offerings like Office, Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone, which we believe will push Skype’s user base to more than a billion users soon.

With a web version, Microsoft may not only be able to improve the reach of Skype, but also make it convenient for users who can access it on any computer without needing to download it first. Skype will also be able to compete more effectively with Google+ Hangouts, and scores of other competitors who allow users access through the web.

With Skype, Microsoft competes primarily with Apple‘s Facetime and Google‘s Hangouts in the mobile space, and Cisco and LifeSize in the enterprise video conferencing space.

We currently have a $38 Trefis price estimate for Microsoft, which stands nearly 20% above its market price. Skype accounts for less than 1% of its total value.
