What Apple Didn't Announce: No AppleTV Developer Kit, No Apple TV Set

This article is more than 10 years old.

If you’re waiting for an opportunity to build software for Apple’s AppleTV set top box, keep waiting.

Apple announced many things at its annual developer conference Monday. Among them: a new version of its MacBook Pro with a ridiculously high-resolution screen, updates to Apple’s iOS and OS X software, and a new, lower price for Apple’s updated 13-inch MacBook Air.

There were many more things, however, that Apple didn’t announce. The biggest: a software developer kit for the AppleTV set top box.

While startups such as Roku and Boxee offering compact, Internet-friendly set top boxes have opened up their platforms to a wide array of developers, Apple still keeps AppleTV on a tight leash, even as the number of developers -- and apps -- for  its iPad and iPhone continue to swell.

Citing a ‘source,’ Boy Genius Report reported that Apple would open up its set top box to outside developers, just as it has its iPhone and iPad. That report was repeated by CNET and other outlets.

Apple's aging Macintosh Pro tower computer didn't get the high-profile makeover many were expecting, either.

However, it appears that Apple has quietly refreshed the machines specifications, if not its chassis (thanks 'msgdsgn').

The Macintosh Pro hasn't gotten a major update since July 2010.

Nor did the Apple TV set many have long predicted materialize.

Apple shares were fell $3.26 to $577.06 in Monday trading.
