Smarter iPad Cover on the Way Thanks to Kickstarter Project

By Kris Holt, TMCnet Contributing Writer

The iPad’s all-singing, all-dancing Smart Cover is becoming a little more intelligent. Apple’s (News - Alert) homegrown cover for its best-selling tablet does a strong job of protecting the screen when not in use and acting as a stand for the device. However, a newly-funded Kickstarter project aims to complement the Smart Cover, many consumers’ iPad accessory of choice.

An app developer named Dotan Saguy created a concept for the Smarter Stand and posted it on the crowd-funding community. The stand is actually designed to work in tandem with the Smart Cover. Using two plastic clips, the Smart Cover is made more rigid and capable of holding the iPad in many more stand positions.

Though the Smart Cover allows owners to position their iPads in a couple of different landscape positions, these have been criticized for being either too low for anything other than typing or too high for comfortable usage. Maneuvering the iPad into a standing portrait position using the Smart Cover is nigh-on impossible.

Using Smarter Stand, iPad owners can place their devices at 45 degrees for optimal Facetime usage or 33 degrees for watching video. The Smarter Stand package includes a stick-on pad that’s designed to protect the iPad from slipping when it’s placed at these angles.

Smarter Stand is designed to remain on the Smart Cover, making it practical for moving around. It does not compromise any of the Smart Cover’s existing functionality, and does not interfere with the built-in magnets on Apple’s cover.

Through the Kickstarter project, buyers can snap up a Smarter Cover for $11, though Saguy is planning to retail his creation for $20. The project received its Kickstarter funding goal of $10,000 within 24 hours, and the funding total stands at $38,060 at the time of writing.

A number of other iPad-related projects, such as the TouchFire keyboard, have been funded through Kickstarter. In total, Kickstarter projects raised an estimated $119.6 million total in the community’s third year of existence.
