At the end of June, we experimented with bringing back the concept of our old "Friday Apple links" posts from the days of yore. At that time, we asked you to tell us how you felt about us rounding up some of the stories we didn't end up covering here at Infinite Loop, and the feedback was great! Many of you told us that you enjoyed the roundup, mostly because you don't have time to follow every single tiny tidbit of news throughout the week from other sites. We're with you, which is why we like to highlight some of the stories from elsewhere in the Apple ecosystem that didn't end up making the cut at Ars for one reason or another.
So, we're trying it again. Again, let us know what you think of the content and frequency, as we're still feeling out whether we want to do these on a regular basis. The goal is to appreciate some of the other Apple news coverage out there on the Web, so here are a few links we collected throughout this last week:
- How I installed Mac OS 10.8 on my MacPro 1,1: Remember how OS X Mountain Lion isn't supported on some 64-bit Macs? There are apparently some workarounds that allow you to install it on some machines, assuming you're comfortable with some tinkering.
- New iPhone on track for fall release, 4G LTE and NFC confirmed, final production starts later this summer: BGR claims to have information confirming that the next-generation iPhone will have LTE capabilities, as well as NFC. We're a little doubtful on the NFC side (though it would be a pleasant surprise), while LTE is almost a given, since the third-generation iPad already supports LTE networks.
- An iPhone App for Skin Cancer Diagnosis: Would you use an app to figure out whether you have cancer? What if it requires you to take 23 nude photos of yourself first? With perfectly legit apps already secretly uploading your iPhone's information to remote servers in the background—plus at least one trojan—such an app might not be the best way to gain user trust right now.
- Motorola Xoom doesn't copy Apple iPad, German court says: What, is the Xoom "not as cool" as the iPad either?
- Apple increases focus on processor technology with appointment of former AMD system architect: Apple's previous chip-related acquisitions involved PA Semi and Intrinsity. John Bruno worked on graphics at ATI/AMD as a system architect, so he designed chips at a relatively high level—he also worked on Trinity, which integrated traditional GPUs with x86 processors. We're guessing Bruno will end up working on CPU/GPU integration at Apple, but most likely on the mobile side.
- Portuguese consumer group to sue Apple over AppleCare: Similar to the case in Italy against Apple's warranty policies, the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection says it plans to sue Apple for allegedly tricking customers into buying AppleCare.
- 20th Century Fox Movies Now Included in iTunes in the Cloud: 20th Century Fox has joined the 21st century by allowing its films to be synced across iOS devices after you buy them from iTunes.
