iMac owners may be eligible for a replacement hard drive free of charge.

Some 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems bought between October 2009 and July 2011 have been shown to contain a 1TB Seagate drive that may fail prematurely.

Apple has emailed affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program, but not everyone may have given an email address -- or their email address might have changed.

Owners of iMac system who think that they are affected can enter their serial number into a form on the Apple website to check to see if their system is part of the replacement program.

Users who choose to update their hard drive will need to have the original OS installation discs that was shipped with their system in order to re-install their operating system, and applications, along with any backed up data, will need to be reinstalled.

Owners who believe that they have paid for a repair or replacement due to this issue can contact Apple for a refund.
