Apple released iOS 6.0.1 today, and you should go get it. It's a minor upgrade to iOS 6 -- the operating system that shipped with the iPhone 5 and that more than 100 million people have subsequently upgraded their iPads and iPhones to run. It has a lot of little fixes, but the one at the top of the list is a doozy. It turns out, the iPhone 5 shipped without the ability to update its software over the air. If you want that functionality, you're either going to need to install an iOS Update Enabler app from Apple (it's an automatic download via Settings) or, yes, plug your iPhone 5 into your computer and go through iTunes.
Number one on Apple's itemized list of improvements is a bullet point that notes it "Fixes a bug that prevents iPhone 5 from installing software updates wirelessly over the air." It also "Resolves an issue that prevents iPhone from using the cellular network in some instances," and another that "Fixes a Passcode Lock bug which sometimes allowed access to Passbook pass details from lock screen."
