App Store Sales Jump 87 Percent Christmas Day

Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod touch were popular gifts this year if App Store sales are any indication. Sales for Christmas day jumped 87 percent compared to the rest of the month, according to data from Distmo, and iPad and iPad mini app sales saw the biggest jump.

"Distimo AppIQ data shows us that the 2012 daily download figures in the Apple App Store for iPad and iPhone increased by 87 percent on Christmas Day compared to the December 2012 average, and moreover, the revenues showed an slightly lower increase of 70 percent," the research firm said. "Given that the iPad downloads and revenues rose by 140 percent and 83 percent respectively, the iPad seems to have been a very popular gift."

The most popular app download was Google's YouTube app, followed by Google Maps. The third and fourth most popular downloads on Christmas Day were the holiday-themed ElfYourself by OfficeMax, and Disney's Where's My Holiday. Skype, Subway Surfers, Flow Free, Furby, Instagram and Emoji & Unicode Icons rounded out the top ten downloads.

Apple typically notes the number of iPads and iPhones sold during its quarterly earnings report, so we're looking forward to seeing just how well the company's mobile devices performed this holiday season. If Distimo's data is any indication, those numbers will likely look very good.
