'Torchlight 2' Sells Over 1 Million Units In 2012

This article is more than 10 years old.

Torchlight 2 was one of the best games of 2012 and its excellent sales in 2012 are well deserved.

Torchlight 2 is one of the best hack-and-slash-and-click-and-loot RPGs to come out in years. It's a thoroughly entertaining, immensely addictive experience.

And apparently quite a few people felt the same way about this scrappy indie title from Runic Games.

"We had an amazing 2012," according to the Runic Games Twitter feed, "and proud to say that #Torchlight2 has sold over 1 million units!"

Not half bad for a self-published, digital-download-only game.

Of course, Blizzard's Diablo 3 moved over 10 million units in spite of all the controversy surrounding that game.

Blizzard, as one half of the Activision-Blizzard colossus, is a much bigger company than Runic Games and Diablo 3 had a larger budget (in terms of both development and advertising) and a lot more name recognition than Torchlight 2.

Actually, the disappointment many Diablo fans experienced over that long-awaited game may have played right into Torchlight 2's gauntleted fists, as upset customers looked for greener loot-filled pastures and stumbled across Torchlight 2 and other indie games designed to scratch the click-itch.

Certainly the $20 price-tag of Torchlight 2 is an appealing alternative to the $60 you'll drop on Diablo 3, regardless of which game you enjoy more.
