Remember thaf half the fun of Cut the Rope was that the cutting mechanic was so intuitive and fun? Sliding the pudding around just feels so good to do. They hit obstacles with a satisfying splat. The animation is top-notch as Cut the Rope was. It’s just a fun game to play, by which I mean the physical act of playing it.
Unfortunately, Pudding Monsters pretty much feels like one giant tutorial. It is constantly introducing new elements, which is not a bad thing, but it just keeps coming with new things every few levels before the end arrives prematurely. This is a tricky balance to achieve but it’s something that Cut the Rope did, along with other greats like Plants vs. Zombies and Hundreds. This feels like there's way too hand-holding throughout the 75 levels.
There’s the promise of new levels, but there needs to be more now. The game is not that difficult at all, though getting 0, 1, 2, and 3 stars on each level can be challenging. Still, for just completion, it’s not a steep hill to climb. Also, is there any reason why this couldn't have been a universal app?
While it’s nice to see ZeptoLab making a new game after years of rope cutting, I think that this is a half-baked concept. It’s going to take further updates to make this concept truly shine through. The game’s physical mechanics are so well-executed that I enabled the push notifications with some anticipation mixed with my disappointment in the current product.
