Last.fm updates its Windows, Mac and Linux desktop Scrobbler apps with new look and more social features

Last.fm updates its Windows, Mac and Linux desktop Scrobbler apps with new look and more social features

Last.fm has rolled out new versions of its desktop apps for Windows, OS X and Linux computers, sporting new features and a snazzy new look.

As before, the desktop apps offer easy access to Last.fm’s Pandora-style radio feature and allow users to log (scrobble, in Last.fm parlance) all the songs they play on desktop media players such as iTunes to their Last.fm profile.

The new look is the most striking thing about the update, bringing the app’s look up to date, and matching the stylings of the recently launched Last.fm Scrobbler app for iOS.

Additional new features include a better view of recently scrobbled songs, offering you the ability to tag, share, buy or mark songs as ‘loved’. The Friends tab snows you what your friends are listening to and lets you quickly start playing any that takes your fancy, if you’re a paid-up subscriber. Adding to the social features, you can now share what you’re listening to on Facebook and Twitter, from the app.

The new updates were released on Tuesday, coinciding with the launch of Last.fm’s new radio policy, which saw the radio feature withdrawn in most countries due to changes to licensing restrictions. It remains as a paid-for subscription feature in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Brazil. Whereas it was previously free in the US, UK and Germany, it’s now for subscribers only in those countries too. We got the radio working without a subscription, but Last.fm tells us that this is a bug that is being removed.

Last.fm’s updated Scrobbler apps for Windows, OS X and Linux are free and available now.
