Dropbox Rebrands Teams Service As Dropbox For Business, Adds New Features

Dropbox is adding a new feature for businesses called "single sign-on," which gives users the ability to sign-in once into their corporate networks and automatically sign into all business applications, including Dropbox.

Dropbox has been steadily building out its offering to businesses called Dropbox for Teams. That service, originally released in October 2011, recently added a new admin console for IT administrators to manage all employees who use Dropbox. It's part of the company's growth from a consumer service to a broader tool for companies. The larger business focus also increases its number of paying customers and generates more revenue for the company.

Dropbox is also renaming its "Dropbox for Teams" service as "Dropbox for Business," because the company targeting large and small companies, says Sujay Jaswa, vice president of business development at Dropbox.

The single sign-on feature not only helps with having one less password to remember and use. It also means additional security and controls for IT managers, says Anand Subramani, product manager of Dropbox for Business.

All of a company's password security features are also included in single sign-on. So for example, if a company uses two factor authentication--a double password security measure--that will also be integrated with Dropbox sign-on. Single sign-on also ties with Dropbox's Active Directory integration, which makes it possible to quickly add or remove Dropbox users across a company. Single sign-on is a key feature for many large enterprises and should drive additional new customers, says Jaswa.

Dropbox is integrating with companies that handle identity management including Ping Identity, Okta, OneLogin, Centrify and Symplified. Dropbox is also using the security assertion markup language (SAML) standard for authentication so that other companies can integrate as well.

Dropbox is now actively used in 2 million businesses, and 600 million work files are saved to Dropbox every week.
