Microsoft wins Google’s Xbox $4 bn patent claim

London: A US judge has rebuffed Google’s claim that Microsoft owes it billions in patent payments.

In 2012, Google subsidiary Motorola had sued Microsoft, claiming it was owed royalties for technologies used in the Xbox console.

It sought damages of about four billion dollars a year, but Microsoft said it would pay about one million dollars.

James Robart has ruled that Microsoft should pay about 1.8 million dollars every year, The BBC reports.

The outstanding patent battle between the two is over the excess charge levied by Motorola for use of its patents. This legal dispute is due for settlement in a Seattle court this year, the reports added.

Motorola and parent company Google are yet to comment on Judge Robart's verdict.
