World's Hottest Game Company Up For Awards

This article is more than 10 years old.

Finnish gaming upstart, Supercell, is in the running for a couple of awards this year. The game developer is up for awards in “New IP” and “Independent Sound” production in the Develop Awards, put on by global gaming trade publication, Develop. The annual event throws the spotlight on European development teams that have wowed gamers.

Now, with daily revenue now at $2.4 million, Supercell is already at a run-rate of more than $800 million for 2013 and could reach $1 billion. The 'Hit-Makers from Helsinki' grossed $100 million last year and netted $104 million in the first quarter of 2013 alone, after expenses and Apple ’s 30% cut.

If it continues on its tear of success, by year’s end it could grow to more than twice the size of Electronic Arts’ mobile games division, which has 900-plus iOS apps (Supercell only has two games—Clash of Clans and Hay Day, available only on iOS). Its two titles attract 8.5 million daily players who play an average of ten times per day.

Other notable nominees for Develop 2013 are Fireproof Games, developer of The Room, received the most nominations with five, followed by four each for Dennaton Games (Hotline Miami), SCE’s London Studio (Wonderbook), Arkane Studios (the French team that co-developed Dishonored) and Playground Games (Forza Horizon).

Winners will be announced at Develop’s July 10th ceremony at the Brighton Hilton Metropole in the sunny UK. The awards event will likely offer a refreshing celebration of geek as bare, British bodies bronze on Brighton beaches. Couldn’t resist.
