Samsung Touts Hands-Free Features in New Galaxy S 4 Commercial

Samsung's usual iPhone mockery has been toned down in its latest television spot, which advertises the new Galaxy S 4.

Instead of focusing on what Apple's flagship phone can't do, Samsung shows off the Galaxy S 4's features in its 90-second commercial, which aired Thursday night during Conan on TBS, Mashable reported.

In "Pool Party" (video below), high school graduate Scott wanders around his own party, still wearing his graduation robe, showing off his new phone — taking pictures, answering calls while his hands are full of ribs, and generally blowing people's minds.

"So, some smartphones are smarter than other smartphones?" a grandfatherly iPhone user asks of the woman who just sent her friend a photo via the Galaxy's NFC feature, S Beam. "Exactly," she nods.

Meanwhile, while the main character is stuffing his face with bar-b-que, he takes a phone call simply by waving his hand above the phone. "You've gotta be kidding me," his father replies, looking incredulous. "That's how you answer it?"

Meanwhile, two girls poolside, lathering on sunscreen, check a text by holding a finger over the device while the message remains on the screen.

"That was awesome," the obviously non-Samsung owner says.

The commercial stays true to Samsung style — dry humor taking a dig at Apple and its seemingly clueless consumers. The South Korean company took the same approach in Nov. 2011, when it released a new ad for the Galaxy S II, which made fun of Apple fans who wait in line for days to get their hands on the next iPhone.

Even in print Samsung manages to get a few punches in. Before the iPhone 5 hit shelves in September, the Galaxy maker ran a newspaper ad comparing the Galaxy S III to the new iDevice, and the claws came out.

Microsoft put that Samsung/Apple rivalry under the microscope recently in a Windows Phone commercial that turned the spotlight on the unruly exchanges between Android and iOS users. In the end, the two people standing on the outskirts of the literal fight are calmly using their Nokia Lumia 920s to videotape the ruckus.

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 hit shelves last month, sporting a 5-inch, full HD Super AMOLED touch-screen display with 441 pixels per inch and 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, running an enhanced version of Google's Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
