'Deus Ex: The Fall' Announced For iPad And iPhone

This article is more than 10 years old.

Square Enix has announced the latest entry in the Deus Ex franchise with Deus Ex: The Fall.

The game takes place after the events of James Swallow's novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect. It's also the first Deus Ex game designed for touch-screen mobile devices.

Frankly, I have a hard time imagining playing the game on an iPad, let alone an iPhone, but I certainly can't hold the idea against Square Enix.

Mobile is the next great frontier of gaming, and game publishers are going to avoid jumping on that bandwagon at their own peril.

After all, even the Halo series is getting a Windows Phone installment.

Still, I've never really liked how shooters play on a touchscreen.

In fact, lately I've really come to believe that turn-based games work the best on these devices---which is why I'm really looking forward the XCOM: Enemy Unknown iPad port, which is also landing this summer.

Real-time action games grow stale quickly on touch devices, and precision is tricky for things like first-person or third-person shooters.

Here's the trailer and announcement for Deus Ex: The Fall:

From the game description:

DEUS EX: THE FALL is set in 2027– a golden era for science, technology and human augmentation, but also a time of great social divide and global conspiracy. Powerful corporations have seized control from governments and command the drug supply needed by augmented humans to survive. In this chaos Ben Saxon, a former British SAS Mercenary who underwent physical augmentation, is desperate for the truth behind the drug conspiracy. Betrayed by his private military employers, the Tyrants, not only is his own life at risk, but for all augmented humans, time is running out…

Developed by the Square Enix Mobile division in Europe, in collaboration with the original DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION® team at Eidos-Montréal and N-Fusion, DEUS EX: THE FALL is a story driven action-RPG and the first DEUS EX in the series to be released on mobile and tablet devices. The game includes never before seen characters from the novel published by Random House, DEUS EX: THE ICARUS EFFECT, picking up directly where the book finishes.

The official website is here. The game launches this summer for $6.99.
