Microsoft Outlook 2013 Coming To Windows Tablets and Phones

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

While Microsoft’s (News - Alert) tablets are not taking as much of the market as the company would hope, it might be seeing a rather quick jump in sales, at least from enterprises, with the launching of Outlook 2013 RT. This program was announced at last week’s Computex 2013 conference and will be available on Windows RT Tablets and phones as part of the Windows 8.1 Update.

The 8.1 update is coming out later this year and will bring Outlook 2013 to the Microsoft Surface and Windows RT tablet when it finally does arrive. Outlook will also apparently be offered on Windows phones.   This really could be a boon for a company that is trying to find a way to get a stronger standing in the tablet market. Microsoft fans make up a huge portion of the people who are actually buying their tablets. When talking about luring customers away from Android (News - Alert) or Apple, Microsoft just isn’t there yet. Bringing a program like Outlook, redesigned and easier to use on tablets will, at the very least, keep those Microsoft fans loyal.

People who are well versed in personal computers might also take another look at a surface or Windows RT if they know that the mail and communication client they are familiar with is actually being offered in tablet form. Along with the announcement of the update on the Microsoft Office Blog, the company pointed out that 61 percent of people looking for tablets find Microsoft Office a very important feature to have.

It seems that until now, programs that can do what Office does have been a good enough substitute, but Microsoft can change that with this release. Now that tablets like the Surface seem to be offering the full Microsoft experience, it could bring in additional customers.

Microsoft says that Outlook 2013 RT offers a streamlined experience. For example, users will be able to reply to an email using inline reply and will have access to “peek” features that allow you to see your calendar or contacts without switching from the mail application.
