Yahoo Rolls Out Flickr TV Campaign During NBA Finals

The newly relaunched Flickr made a splash this week as Yahoo rolled out a new commercial spot for the service during the NBA Finals.

Just about any tech company can come up with a slick, touchy-feely commercial for its product, post the video to YouTube, and then hope the consumer engagement magic happens. Yahoo, however, decided to go bigger with a spot for its recently redesigned Flickr service during game three of the NBA Finals on ABC.

The commercial (below), titled "Biggr. Spectaculr. Wherevr. Flickr.," is set to the Bright Eyes song "The First Day of My Life" and features a montage of images of a pug dog and its owner. The gifted pug even swipes through Flickr photos of himself on an Android tablet.

Touting the service's sharing features and terabyte of storage added during last month's relaunch, the spot does a good job of positioning Flickr as a viable alternative to competing services like Instagram on Android and iOS.

While Yahoo under the direction of former Googler Marissa Mayer may not have had its first big breakout success yet, it's beginning to look like the company's board of directors made the right gamble the first-time CEO. Yahoo's veritable parade of CEOs over the last few years mostly came in an attempt to maintain the status quo, with varying results, none of which changed the somewhat dim public profile of the company for the better.

But Mayer appears intent on taking chances her predecessors wouldn't in a bid to breathe new life into the once sagging fortunes of a pioneering Internet brand. Of course, a new national ad campaign alone can't remedy the company's rocky recent history, but it's a good start.
