This article is more than 10 years old.

There is definitely a disconnect between the percentage ownership of various tablets and which ones access the Internet. When comparing survey results from Frank Magid Associates on ownership (tied between Apple and Android devices) and usage from Chitika Apple dominates usage.

Magid Associates surveyed 1,068 tablet owners and users asking them which tablet brands they own in their households. It found that 44% of the U.S. population between the ages of 8 to 64 owned a tablet which compares to 30% in 2012. It also forecasts that 54% of on-line Americans will have a tablet within a year.

Some other interesting results from its survey were:

  • A majority of online Americans (54%) ages 18 to 34 own a tablet
  • Apple’s full-sized iPad share of 53% was the same as last year
  • When the iPad mini is included 59% of owners had an iPad
  • Android’s share increased from 47% to 59% matching Apple’s
  • Amazon’s Kindle Fire had the second highest share at 31% vs. 28% the prior year
  • Samsung was third increasing its share from 13% to 19%
  • Almost a third (32%) have multiple table brands in their household
  • Spending on tablet apps grew from $1.6 billion to $2.3 billion over the past year, an increase of 42%.

Chitika sampled tens of millions of U.S. and Canadian on-line ad impressions between May 15 to 21. It found that Apple’s iPads had an 82.4% share, its highest since the beginning of the year. Amazon’s Kindle Fire came in a distant second at 6.5% and had its share drop from 7.4% in May. Samsung’s Galaxy tablets came in third with a 4.7% share.

One reason Apple is maintaining its dominance of the tablet market is due to having over 300,00 customized apps for the iPad. The company is most assuredly targeting how to leverage this ecosystem with new services and features to not just increase its short-term revenue but to also increase the stickiness of Apple products.
