While many organizations rush to join the RSS reader movement, Yahoo is instead giving its old-fashioned news homepage a boost.

Today, Yahoo News got a makeover to make it more personal, intuitive, and modern — the next step in the company's series of upgrades aimed at designing a more consistent Yahoo.

"The first thing you'll notice about the new Yahoo News is that it was designed around your interests and preferences," Mike Kerns, vice president of product, said in a blog post.

A new customizable news stream allows users to choose the content they'd like to see more of, Kerns said, and the system will "get smarter over time." That is, the more signed-in users take advantage of the site, the more it learns their preferences, eventually creating a personal news hub.

The updated site, meanwhile, will load articles quicker than before, he said. It also comes with a more intuitive content stream, with easier navigation through news categories like politics, tech, and science, as well as the ability to find original and partner content from organizations like ABC News.

The update has also hit iOS devices, and will reach Android phones and tablets soon.

"We wanted to be sure you're getting not only a familiar experience but the best experience whether you're sitting at your desk or on-the-go," Kerns said.

The redesigned Yahoo News is rolling out to U.S. users over the next couple of days.

This move comes only weeks after the company debuted a new Google-esque search page, and shuttered Yahoo Mail Classic, making way for the new version of Mail. Yahoo also reconstructed Flickr in May, complete with 1 terabyte of free storage. The changes are all part of Yahoo's grand plan to make uniform all of its services.

One piece of the Yahoo puzzle that won't be overhauled is Tumblr, the acquisition of which Yahoo completed last week, one month after it first announced plans to purchase the popular blogging platform for $1.1 billion.

CEO Marissa Mayer also recently announced the acquisitions of two startups — iOS photo-editing app maker GhostBird, and enterprise conference-calling service Rondee.
