Realism At Intel

At last the penny has dropped at Intel that, if it wants to make competitive chips for mobile, it has to make them on a leading edge process.

Talking about new iterations of Atom, CEO, Brian Krzanich, says: “It’s launching on the same leading edge technology, sometimes even coming before Core.”

Up to now, Intel has always kept it leading edge processes for PC and server processors and has relegated Atom-based mobile processors to older processes.

Krzanich showed realism by saying that Intel’s foundry business would not turn down ARM-based chips out of hand, but would consider the strategic value of the customer.

Some of the old Intel stalwarts had been saying they’d only fab ARM over their dead bodies – notwithstanding that they fabbed loads of X-Scale chips for many years.

And Krzanich acknowledged Intel’s lack of expertise in content as a downside to launching a play in the cable TV industry.

It looks as if there’s a new realism at the top of Intel.

Now all the boss has to do is knock heads together to ensure he gets his way.
