'Heads Up!' Uses iPad To Create Hysterical Frantic Family Fun

This article is more than 10 years old.

In case you missed its appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Heads Up! is a neat guessing game that works with players of all ages.

At first it seems like this is another app that replicates what is essentially a parlor game that already works fine on bits of paper. However, the clever design really does add some simplicity to the experience and open it up for a wider range of ages.

They way it works is that one player holds the iPad on their head, the app then displays a word for the other players to act out. The player with the iPad then needs to guess the word. When they get it right they tilt the app forwards (or pass by tilting it backwards).

Cleverly the app uses this play-structure to opportunistically film the other players as they act out the various words. The replay of these videos was almost as much fun as the game itself. Either way we were thoroughly entertained. You can even share the videos straight to Facebook if you want to extend the humiliation further.

The app comes with a set of cards along the themes of Celebrities, Movies, Animals, Characters and my favorite, Accents.

Heads Up! is available from the App Store for $0.99.
