Boston University sues Apple over patent, wants iPhone sales ban
Raise your hand if you’re beginning to feel like you’re the last person on the planet who isn’t suing someone for infringing a smartphone patent.
That exclusive group just a got a little bit smaller thanks to a new lawsuit filed by Boston University against Apple.
Filed this week in a Massachusetts federal court, BU wants to ban a whole bunch of Apple products, including the iPhone 5, the iPad, and the MacBook Air.

Such a ruling would devastate the company, though it remains about as likely as you stepping foot on the moon. Such cases are notoriously complex, and can take years to litigate and work through various appeals.
The patent in question was granted in 1997 and covers what the suit describes as a “gallium nitride thin film semiconductor device.” BU alleges the various Apple gadgets contain such technology.
