IBM Layoffs Become Official Today

Friday 7/12/13 at Noon & 7PM: At least 340 IBM employees are being laid off at the Essex Junction plant this month, and the number will likely be higher when it becomes official on Friday. We talk with Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan about the state's programs to assist laid off IBMers, and with economist Art Woolf about the role of IBM in the state’s economy.

Also in the program, reporter Sarah Harris recaps two town meetings this week on the F-35 fighter jet that might be based the Burlington airport. South Burlington's Select Board voted to support the program, Winooski's Select Board voted not to.

And we listen back to some of the voices in the week's news.

Steve Zind

Many VPR listeners recognize Steve for his special reports from Iran, providing a glimpse of this country that is usually hidden from the rest of the world. Prior to working with VPR, Steve served as program director for WNCS for 17 years, and also worked as news director for WCVR in Randolph. A graduate of Northern Arizona University, Steve also worked for stations in Phoenix and Tucson before moving to Vermont in 1972. Steve has been honored multiple times with national and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for his VPR reporting, including a 2011 win for best documentary for his report, Afghanistan's Other War.
