Increased IT Productivity and Enhanced Management
Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c's next-generation automation capabilities allow administrators to streamline IT management processes, free up resources and reduce overall costs. The new cloud lifecycle management capabilities for Oracle Database 12c include:

  • Innovative management for multitenant databases: Offers customers in-depth intelligence into capacity planning, post-consolidation performance and faster deployments for consolidated database environments. New features include:

    • Complete lifecycle management of multitenant databases: Support for the entire lifecycle operations of multitenant databases that comprise migration, creation, cloning and patching. The powerful configuration management capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager enable administrators to track the multitenant databases, manage compliance and avoid sprawl.

    • Consolidated database replay: Allows customers to test and plan their consolidation using Oracle's multitenant container and pluggable database technology. Using real application workloads, administrators can understand the effects of database consolidation on service levels, resources and performance in either a standard or multitenant database environment.

    • At-source data masking: Allows customers to maximize compliance and security by masking data in-flight as it is being copied from production, thus helping ensure that sensitive data never leaves production system unmasked.

  • Enhancements for continued industry leading performance management: Focused on streamlining database administration, allowing administrators to make faster decisions and spend less time analyzing issues, improving overall service quality and IT productivity. New features include:

    • Enhanced diagnostics: Improvements to Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM) for real-time and proactive problem detection, especially designed for catching short, transient performance issues.

    • Real-time business operations monitoring: Monitors composite business operations like batch jobs and ETL operations, providing real-time report of all SQLs and PL/SQLs executed inside the job.

    • Performance hub: Newly redesigned performance Home Page that provides administrators with a single, at-a-glance view of all performance data and advisors such as Active Sessions, I/O, memory, CPU, ADDM, SQL Tuning, Real-Time SQL Monitoring and Active Session History (ASH) Analytics.

    • New Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Express 12c: An out-of-the-box, lightweight, easy-to-use web-based management solution for managing individual databases.

  • New capabilities for deploying and managing database clouds: Enable consolidation, standardization, self-service automation and showback/chargeback while lowering cost of delivering database as a service (DBaaS). The new DBaaS features work on Oracle Database 10g and above.

    • Schema as a Service: Ultimate consolidation of databases that lets administrators host multiple application schemas within a single database and thus offer database-as-a-service to hundreds of application users without creating database sprawl. Users can perform day-to-day actions like provisioning, monitoring and backup, all from a single self-service console. Schema-as-a-service leverages database features like the Resource Manager and Database Vault to isolate the users of the cloud. This is complemented by metering and showback/chargeback capabilities, which provide visibility and transparency into resource consumption by each user.

    • Snap Clone: Instant database cloning allows administrators to create fully functional copies of databases using the copy-on-write (CoW) capabilities of the underlying storage layer. Users can request these databases from the self-service console and have them provisioned within minutes instead of hours while keeping storage needs to a minimum. This technology is particularly useful for large scale functional testing on data that does not undergo lot of changes. Using Snap Clone, one can also create multiple snapshots of the database and "time travel" across these snapshots to access data from any point in time. Snap Clone can fundamentally improve the efficiency and agility of administrators and QA Engineers while saving CAPEX on storage.
