It looks like this has been possible since, oh, Mac OS X 10.5 or so, but I hadn’t come across it before. I’m guessing that might mean some of you haven’t, either.
If you’re one of those amazing folks who have seen this already, then feel free to check out all our other OS X tips; it’s possible there’s something in the list you didn’t know about already.
For the rest of you, if you want to disable the translucent menu bar on your Mac, it’s relatively simple. Check it out.
No, you don’t have to go to the Terminal app and type in some arcane command. Apparently, all you need to do is launch System Preferences, click on Desktop & Screensaver, and then click on the little checkbox there next to “Translucent menu bar.” Boom. The end.
Now your menu bar is plain white, fully opaque, and won’t distract you any more with all its shining transparency. Whew.
If you want to change it back, that’s right, you simply have to re-check the checkbox and you’ll be seeing through the menu bar yet again. Amazing, right?
