ESPN on Thursday updated its WatchESPN iPad app with a new "Live Toolbar" feature, which lets you stay up to date with news, scores, and more while watching live programming.
The Live Toolbar, available only for the iPad, essentially lets you multitask without having to navigate away from the live stream of whatever event you're watching. The coolest feature is the ability to watch a second video right alongside live ESPN programming when rotating your tablet to landscape mode. This way, you can check out on-demand video of the latest news, highlights, and analysis without having to miss a second of the game, or to distract yourself when your team is losing.
Besides that, the Live Toolbar also includes an interactive channel guide for all ESPN networks, as well as scores and stats.
"The catalyst for this latest update to the WatchESPN app was content discovery and interactivity," Damon Phillips, vice president of WatchESPN and ESPN3, said in a statement. "Video is at the very core of what ESPN does best, and the addition of scores, stat, and robust highlights and clips complement the fan viewing experience."
The update also adds support for Apple's iOS 7, as well as live programming of ESPN on ABC events. In addition, those connecting from a college or military network will now get access to ESPN3 events automatically.
WatchESPN version 1.7 is now available for free in the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. The app provides live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, and ESPN Goal Line/Buzzer Beater to sports fans who receive ESPN as part of their cable TV package.
