Oracle has released a new virtualisation tool, the Virtual Compute Appliance.

According to Oracle, the system, which is designed to enable easy application virtualisation, delivers rapid and repeatable full-stack virtual infrastructure deployment, and is able to deploy virtual machines (VMs) quickly.

"The Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance is unique in accelerating not only virtual infrastructure deployment, but also in speeding deployment of the complete application stacks through Oracle VM Templates," says Wim Coekaerts, senior VP for Linux and virtualisation engineering at Oracle.

The system integrates into existing storage and networking environments, which enables re-hosting of existing applications, as well as the deployment of new applications that require access to existing data, says Oracle. It connects to existing Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks through pooled interconnect modules, which are available to all VMs.

The appliance integrates with Oracle Enterprise manager, and is able to run Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, other Linux distributions, and Microsoft Windows, simultaneously if necessary. Support for pre-tested and pre-configured Oracle VM templates is included, along with support of Oracle Trusted Partitions, which allows Oracle software to be licensed on a virtual CPU basis.

The system comes assembled and requires minimal configuration in order to reduce the risk of physical and software configuration errors. Additional compute nodes may be added to the appliance by sliding the new node into a rack, connecting four pre-wired cables, and turning it on. The system conducts automatic detection and configuration.

The appliance delivers integration between hardware, virtualisation and applications, says Coekaerts. "So our customers can save weeks of effort and lower their cost when deploying virtual infrastructure and applications."
