In June, Electronic Arts made a "tough decision" to postpone the release of 'SimCity' for Mac until August, but it appears that the two-month delay might not have been enough. Today, on the day of release, the game's forums are already crawling with users experiencing a variety of issues with the software — issues wholly unlike the server woes that plagued the Windows original. Electronic Arts has admitted a number of potential issues installing the Mac version of the game and getting it to run, going so far as to create a "SimCity Mac Install FAQ" to help players avoid some of the most common ones.

Still not ready for prime time?

For instance, the game doesn't presently support Mac OS 10.7.4 and earlier versions of the operating system (despite advertising otherwise), and a number of players are experiencing situations where pressing the "Install" button won't install the game. Electronic Arts is advising players to switch their entire operating system's default language to English and / or install a beta version of its Origin digital distribution platform to get things working properly.

However, others cite potentially more serious issues with the program, ones which EA has yet to address. A number of forum posters claim that the Mac port of the game runs terribly on their computers, even when they allegedly run the game fine in Windows on top of the same hardware. Quite a few also claim the Mac version of the game doesn't support high resolutions, up to and including that of the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. 27-inch iMac users are allegedly stuck at 1920 x 1440 rather than the full 2560 x 1440 resolution of their monitor, while a couple of Retina users claim they can't go past 1440 x 900 and can't make the game stretch across the full screen. Seems like it might be time to make use of EA's new no-questions-asked refund policy.

"There are a small number of players who have encountered issues with SimCity for Mac," a Maxis spokesperson told Polygon. "Our live team is working individually with our players to resolve their issues and get them into the game as quickly as possible."

Update 8/30: EA has pushed out an update which reportedly fixes the "mutexAlert" bug, which kept some players with non-English languages from installing or playing the game. "We are pleased to advise that the installation-related issues some players experienced with SimCity on Mac have been resolved," an EA representative tells The Verge.
