IBM again tops in server market

Big Blue seems to be dealing with a lot of changes in the marketplace.

It's unclear what impact, if any, this pair of news tidbits could have on IBM's Rochester campus, which has undergone some layoffs this year.

• The quarterly industry report by IDC shows IBM regained the top industry spot in the server market in third quarter, despite its sales and revenue dropping.

Here's some from the Forbes magazine article on this:

"IDC's second quarter server revenue projection has IBM with $3.3 billion in factory revenue, down 10 percent year over year, but regaining the top market share position with 27.9 percent share.

HP's year over year rate of decline accelerated for the second quarter in a row with revenue of $3.1 billion falling 17.5 percent in the June quarter after a decline of 14.8 percent in the March quarter for a 25.9 percent share.

Dell maintained a solid third position with $2.2 billion in revenue for an 18.8 percent share and increased its server revenue greater then 10% for the past two quarters."

• IBM's brand-new Power8 chip will be the core component in its new open development alliance with other companies like Google.

Here's some from the PC World magazine article on this:

"IBM hopes to spawn third-party Power servers by opening up its 12-core Power8 chip design to licensees, and now the company has to convince component makers to make parts for the servers.

"With Power8, IBM is providing hooks so component makers can easily plug their parts into the new breed of servers, said Bill Starke, Power chip architect, in an interview during the Hot Chips conference this week in Stanford, Calif." -- Jeff Kiger
