Whenever an operating system or application changes appearances in a radical way, people can get lost. Such is the case with iOS 7. In the past week I’ve read complaints that can be addressed simply by having a better understanding of what goes where. Let’s walk through a few.
In iOS 6 I was able to choose a time zone when creating a calendar event. I now can’t. I hate iOS 7!
You’ll find that you hate it less when you go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and, way down in the Calendars section, switch on Time Zone Support. When you do you’ll find that when you create a new event in the Calendar app a Time Zone entry is present and accounted for. Without Time Zone Support toggled on, this entry is missing.
The toggle switches in the Settings app are so tiny that I can never seem to drag them correctly. It often takes two or three swipes to get it done. iOS 7 is ruining my life!
Even though the interface design of toggle switches makes you believe they must be swiped, you can flip them from the On to Off position (or vice versa) simply by tapping on them.
In iOS 6 I was able to search the contents of a Safari page using the Search field. I now can’t because of Safari’s stupid unified address field. iOS 7 is the devil’s spawn!
This one is easy to miss. Go ahead and type the term you wish to search for in the unified field. Now scroll all the way to the bottom of the results list. You’ll see an On This Page heading, under which will be Find followed by your search term—Find “bagels,” for example. Tap it and you’ll see the first instance of that term highlighted on the resulting page. To move to the next instance, tap the right-pointing arrow on the bottom of the device’s screen.
When I try to swipe on my iPhone’s Home screen to bring up the Search field I always expose Notification Center. iOS 7 is the worst thing in the world!
What would Steve do? He’d tell you you’re swiping wrong. There are four basic swipes on an iOS device. As you already know, swiping left or right moves you through the device’s home screens. Swipe down from the very top of the screen and you’ll reveal Notification Center. Swipe up from the very bottom and there’s Control Center. Swipe down from anywhere in between the top and bottom extremes and you should see the Search field.
If you have large thumbs I’d suggest that you swipe down from the second row of icons. That should guarantee that you don’t slop over to the point where Notification Center appears.
I can’t stand the Photos app’s Moments view. On my iPod touch the Years view where images are clustered together is too small, even when I tap and hold on images to see “bigger” thumbnails. My toddler says iOS 7 is poo poo!
If you don’t like it, don’t use it. Tap on the Albums button at the bottom of the screen and you’ll see your pictures gathered together in an album view very much like iOS 6.
The Music app is useless! The album art takes up too much space, I can’t create playlists that contain audiobooks or podcasts, and iTunes Radio’s generated stations have repeated songs and wander all over the musical landscape. iOS 7 makes me want to throw my iPhone under a bus!
Now hold on. The Music app is… well… um… okay, yeah, you’re right. It’s not very good. Then again, it wasn’t terribly good under iOS 6 either.
