Following Apple's release of iOS 7, a number of apps were given a fresh coat of paint to embrace the new mobile operating system's flat design. Now Instagram is following suit.

The photo and video-sharing social network on Wednesday released a new version of its iOS app with design updates and performance improvements for iOS 7.

"To bring you the best experience possible, we have always valued beauty and simplicity in our app," according to an Instagram blog post. "With the introduction of iOS 7 and its emphasis on clarity, we were excited to rebuild the look and feel of Instagram in a way that would bring these principles together and let the moments this community captures and shares shine."

Most notably, Instagram increased the size of photos and videos in your feed so they now expand to the edges of your screen. The increased size also translates to a higher resolution, meaning photos and videos will be clearer than before. Instagram also tweaked the grid view so that content appears larger.

"We led our redesign with a focus on clarity to keep the feel of Instagram clean, simple and grounded in the photos and videos you discover and share," Instagram said.

One other change users will notice right away is that profile photos are now circular, mirroring the conventions of iOS 7. Instagram for iOS version 4.2 is available for download now in the App Store.

Other apps that have upgraded for iOS 7 include Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Pocket, and OpenTable. For more detail on those changes, check out the slideshow above.
