Report: Intel TV Delayed Due to Funding

Intel's rumored Web TV service may not make it past the development stage if it doesn't find a backer soon.

According to AllThingsD, the chip maker has been talking with Samsung, Amazon, and Netflix in hopes of funding and distributing its online-only service. Originally scheduled to launch by the end of this year, the over-the-top TV system has been delayed to 2014, Variety reported.

Rumors of an Intel-based set-top box, dubbed OnCue, surfaced in March 2012, and were revived in late December ahead of January's Consumer Electronics Show, where Intel was expected to unveil its new Netflix-like cloud-based TV service.

The service was confirmed earlier this year, when an Intel Media manager told ATD that the box will stream live TV and movies, as well as on-demand titles; as of February, content partner deals were still in negotiations.

The OnCue, under development by a 350-person team, would use a massive back-end server to record all aired programming — local, national, and international — and store it in the cloud for at least three days.

Users would then simply turn on the box to watch any show or movie that aired in the past few days, with the added ability to rewind and fast forward without a local DVR connection.

But new Intel CEO Brian Krzanich recently downplayed the rumors, saying that while the company has a great user interface and the right technology, "if we want to provide the service it comes down to content."

Intel, Netflix, and Samsung declined to comment on the rumor; Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
