B.O.B's Super Freaky Job Review

It's an idea that's been done elsewhere in the past, but B.O.B.'s Super Freaky Job could have been quite a cute and fun physics-focused puzzle game. That is until someone somewhere decided to make the in-app purchases frustratingly intrusive. It results in a gaming experience that's all too stilted.

Starting out reasonably promising, players control B.O.B the, er, blob as he attempts to work his way through numerous levels full of obstacles and collectibles. Other "Monsters vs Aliens" characters feature amongst the levels and story based interludes, but admittedly this is the kind of game that could have been created with any bunch of characters.

B.O.B can only move through the rotation of the world around him. While this would immediately suggest tilt-based controls, it's actually done through swiping a finger around the screen to flick the world around. It's a lot simpler than dealing with calibration and other issues that come with tilt controls, but it's still not always as accurate as one would like.

Levels start out simple enough; building up to the need to collect keycards to open certain doorways plus avoiding lasers, turbines, and even wormholes. This is also where the noticeable freemium-based problem of B.O.B.'s Super Freaky Job arises. At times, B.O.B can be frozen in place by lasers or the villainous Coverton. This immediately puts a stop to the action until a time limit has expired or the player spends $0.99 to unfreeze B.O.B. In later stages this can happen often, even when trying to be careful. It's infuriating and unnecessary for anyone but those seeking to gain money from the situation.

That issue wouldn't be so noticeable if it wasn't for the fact that B.O.B.'s Super Freaky Job feels like a game we've all played before. That idea of manipulating scenery to send a character around to collect items has been done. Quite a lot. Take out the in-app purchases (which, admittedly, a skilled player can dodge most of the time), and B.O.B.'s Super Freaky Job still lacks a certain imaginative spark. It'll prove briefly entertaining but that's not really enough.
