Apple is allegedly planning to use its recent acquisition of PrimeSense to boost its 3D indoor mapping push.

Washington Post tech journalist Jessica Lessin's sources claim that the Cupertino firm wants to use the Kinect maker's technology to take on Google in the sector.

Previous reports suggested that Apple purchased Israeli firm PrimeSense to incorporate its motion tech into television-based hardware, but Lessin insists this is unlikely.

Her report suggests that PrimeSense has fallen behind in this respect, adding that early prototype models of the so-called iTV sets do not feature motion controls.

"As for the endless anticipation around an Apple television, I continue to hear that the company is more interested in set-top boxes for now and that some early prototypes haven't had motion technology," said Lessin.

PrimeSense worked with Microsoft on the Xbox 360 Kinect accessory, but the firm's latest motion sensor Capri is designed to fit into smaller hardware, such as laptops, smartphones and tablets.

Apple previously acquired WiFiSlam to improve its indoor mapping services.
