UPDATE: iMediaEthics looked into this report, which was also reported by Time and BuzzFeed, and found that Vouchercloud’s publicity firm is 10 Yetis PR.

The site pointed out that 10 Yetis PR was involved in viral publicity stunts in the past, raising questions about the validity of this study. In turn, the agency answered Time‘s inquiry into the matter, saying that the study was completely valid.

“It’s a completely real study and survey that we sent out to a large database,” said the PR agency. “I’ve read the claims I know exactly what you’re talking about, but it is a real tried and tested method. We’re quite well known in the U.K. for doing these. It’s 100% genuine and what we do is 100% valid.”

This might be the press release in question, published on Scribd by Matthew Keys.

ORIGINAL STORY: HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is a language used for creating web pages and information you see in a web browser. While the tech savvy people know that very well, it seems that some Americans have a different idea of what HTML is. A very different idea.

Coupons website Vouchercloud.net conducted a study, which consisted of 2,392 men and women over 18 years old, in order to gauge how well Americans know tech-related terms. They were shown tech and non-tech terms and were then asked to pick from three possible definitions. 1 in 10 thought HTML was a sexually transmitted disease.

“Technology is a huge interest for our user base, and month after month we see thousands of people visiting our site to look for coupons and deals to use when purchasing their favorite tech products,” said a company spokeswoman in a statement sent to The LA Times. “It seems that quite a few of us need to brush up on our tech definitions.”

When the study found that 11% of presenters thought that HTML was an STD, the company spokeswoman could not be closer to the truth. Let’s look at other interesting results:

  • 77% did not know what SEO, or “Search Engine Optimization,” stood for.
  • 27% thought that a gigabyte, a unit of computer memory or data storage, was an insect found in South America.
  • 23% believed that MP3, a common audio format, was a robot found in Star Wars.
  • 15% of respondents said that software, a term used for computer programs, was comfortable clothing.
  • 12% thought that USB, a common type of connector, was an acronym for a European country.
  • 18% believed that Blu-ray, a DVD format used to store high-definition video and data, was a marine animal.
  • 42% identified a motherboard, a circuit board that acts as the glue for a computer’s components, as “the deck of a cruise ship.”

Despite these pretty hilarious results, 61% of respondents said that having good knowledge of today’s technology is important. The irony here is sweeter than double-layered chocolate cake.

Fiber optic internet service is the future, and with Verizon Fios you can get some of the fastest internet service around. We’ve rounded up all of the best Verizon Fios deals available right now, and they include low monthly costs, waived setup charges, and a number of freebies like Target gift cards.
2 Gigabit Verizon Fios connection -- $85 per month + free extras
One of the fastest internet speeds you can get, and the fastest speed that Verizon offers, this is the sort of subscription you should grab if all the members of your family are essentially watching 4k content all the time. It's also great for those who want to host their own media server to share with friends or family while not impacting anybody else in the home. You also get a lot of great freebies included here, such as the choice of either a $300 Target gift card or a $350 value Samsung Chromebook Go, which is admittedly an entry-level device, but it's not bad to use for just streaming content. On top of that, you can choose between 2TB of Verizon cloud storage and 12 months of Disney+ with no ads or a MoCA Ethernet Adapter for gaming and a $50 Xbox eGift Card. You could also get both of these if you add an extra $10/month, although it's probably not worth it at that point.

1 Gigabit Verizon Fios connection -- $65 per month + free extras
If the super-fast speeds aren't necessarily needed, especially if you're in a smaller household without too many folks watching content, then the 1 Gigabit version is the way to go. It is $20 cheaper, so it's a lot of money that you're saving over the course of the year, and you still get quite a few extra benefits, even at this level. You get to choose either a $200 Target gift card or the same sort of Samsung Chromebook Go that's worth $350 that's great for streaming content. You also get a similar choice as the 2 Gigabit connection, which includes either 2TB of Verizon cloud storage and six months of Disney+ without ads, or a MoCA Ethernet Adapter for gaming and a $50 Xbox eGift Card.

It's not going to stay this cheap for long though, so if you're interested in this bargain you're going to have to complete your purchase as soon as possible.

Why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (2024) is now available, but the 2022 release of the tablet, which is the one that's discounted on Walmart, remains a worthwhile purchase today as long as you manage your expectations. It's not going to challenge the best tablets in terms of performance as it only offers 4GB of RAM, but it's going to be more than enough for daily activities such as browsing the internet, catching up on social media, and watching streaming shows. The tablet only comes with 64GB of storage, but you can use a microSD card for up to 1TB of additional space.
