Google today rolled out an update to its Gmail app for iOS that adds background app refresh, so you no longer have to wait to get your messages.
"Your Gmail messages will be pre-fetched and synced so they're right there when you open the app—no more annoying pauses while you wait for your inbox to refresh," Melissa Dominguez, a Google software engineer, wrote in a blog post.
The feature works on devices running iOS 7. Background app refresh and notifications for the Gmail app will also have to be switched on (Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Gmail).
Another time-saving addition in today's update is single sign-on across Google's iOS apps. If you sign into Gmail, for example, you'll also be signed into the Google Drive, YouTube, or Chrome app, if they are installed on your device. Similarly, Google will sign you out of those apps, too.
"So you won't have to type in that 27-character password or retrieve your 2-step verification code every time you navigate to another Google app," Dominguez said. "You may need to re-login after you update the app, but then you'll be all set."
The app is available for download in the App Store now.
The move comes shortly after Google added an "unsubscribe" button within Gmail to help you quickly rid your inbox of unwanted newsletters and promotions.
Earlier today, meanwhile, Yahoo confirmed that Google (and Facebook) users will no longer be able to sign into its services with their Google or Facebook log-ins, a move intended to encourage more people to use Yahoo IDs.
