Dell Launches Kid-friendly $539 Latitude 13 Education Notebook
Building on the success of its small-business Latitude line, Dell today announced the Latitude 13 Education Series notebook. Though geared for students, this 13-inch ultraportable, available today, has many of the same reliability, durability, and security features of Dell's SMB systems, and will start at a very affordable $539.

The Latitude 13 Education series has a matte black shell, with rubber bumpers (available in black, red, and blue) lining the lid and deck. The lid folds back 180 degrees, not only to allow for greater collaboration, but also to ensure that a child doesn't break the hinge when trying to tilt the screen back. Also on the top of the lid is a white LED, which illuminates whenever the notebook is actively using its Wi-Fi connection. This way, teachers can see at a glance whether or not their students are actually working, or just goofing off on the Internet.
Educators will have an option of selecting either a touch- or a non-touchscreen version of the Latitude 13; both will have a resolution of 1366 x 768. The non-touch version will measure 13 x 9.6 x 0.89-1.34 inches and weigh 3.7 pounds. The touch version will be a slightly thicker 0.96-1.01 inches and weigh 4.1 pounds.
Standard on all notebooks are two USB ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and mini DisplayPort, as well as an SD card reader.For the starting price of $539, the Latitude 13 Education Series will come with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and a 4-cell battery that will provide up to 8 hours of endurance. Other options include Windows 7 or Windows 8, a larger 6-cell 65WHr battery, solid state drives, and faster processors.
