Photoshop can bring a nearly unlimited number of photo effects to your Mac. The full version of Photoshop is now rental only, so you’d be paying for the privilege of unlimited effects of every kind for as long as you can afford to pay Adobe to rent Photoshop.
Or, you can grab any one of a few dozen Mac photo utility and enhancement apps- of the one-trick pony variety- and get hundreds of effects for hundreds of dollars less. One such example is the cheap Effects for Photos app for the Mac. It is exactly what it says it is- a collection of effects, filters, and enhancements for your photos. Almost 500, so they’re priced at barely a penny each.
The interface is different, too, starting with effects package which let you select what you want applied to a photo.
If you’re not expecting much in the way of bells and whistles for so little money then you won’t be disappointed.
Effects for Photos has hundreds of effects that easily implemented and adjusted and there’s almost no learning curve because there’s very little to learn.
For example, drop text onto an enhanced photo, select the font and use a slider bar to adjust the font size. Add color as needed. Even the effects use simple slider bars for tweaks and adjustments (with an option for a numeric entry).
While Effects for Photos is slightly above my personal threshold of throwaway money to try-by-buying, the developer offers a free version of Effects for Photos which is limited to 50 different effects (and no text overlay). That’s enough to try-before-you-buy.
If all you need is an app with a huge number of photos effects at a lower than low price, this is it. No bells and whistles. No cluttered interface. No learning curve.
